Due to a landslide, this walk is temporarily closed for cleaning and maintenance until further notice.Spanning a distance of 6.5 km (plus 6.5 km for the return journey), the PR 9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail presents a moderate level of challenge, offering walkers a unique opportunity to delve into the island's interior orography, renowned for its monumental landscapes.
The journey commences with a captivating start, as you venture forth from the Casa de Abrigo das Queimadas within the Queimadas Forest Park. This shelter preserves the original charm of Santana's distinctive triangular houses, crowned with traditional thatched roofs.
Shortly after setting off, the esplanade of Levada do Caldeirão Verde greets you, where nature unfolds in exotic splendor. The trail winds through the heart of the Laurissilva forest, where abundant water has flowed through this historic levada since the 18th century, nourishing the agricultural lands of the Faial parish. A genuine fairytale adventure unfolds in this lush green paradise, beginning at Casa das Queimadas. The path to the majestic waterfall is adorned in vibrant greenery, granting intermittent vistas that stretch over the village of São Jorge and the vast mountains beyond.
Throughout the Levada do Caldeirão Verde, a route punctuated by cliffs and mountains, you'll traverse four tunnels carved into the rock. Later, on your left, the stunning Caldeirão Verde lake comes into view, its waters plummeting vertically from the Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde stream, creating a captivating cascade that falls from a height of about 100 meters.
Water is a constant companion on this journey—sprouting from walls, flowing serenely through the levada, and descending from the heavens on rainy days. It's a fantastic and safe trail suitable for exploration year-round. Upon reaching the Caldeirão Verde waterfall, allow yourself to be captivated by the breathtaking sight of the immense cascade pouring into the cool, crystalline lagoon. Take a moment to unwind to the soothing sounds of falling water and perhaps enjoy a picnic before your return.
As you encounter several tunnels along the path, remember to bring a flashlight and protect your head.
