Vereda do Pico Ruivo

Wed
09h00 - 17h00

Note

This walk is NOT the Madeira Peaks walk that goes from Pico do Arieiro to Pico Ruivo. That route is currently closed for maintenance. This is a smaller route that goes from Achadas do Teixeira to Pico Ruivo and back.

Starting from Achadas do Teixeira, this trail takes hikers up to Pico Ruivo, the highest peak on Madeira Island at an altitude of 1861 meters.

Along the way, you'll encounter various shelters where you can stop for a break, enjoy a snack, or simply relax in the shade provided by dense fog that often envelops the area.

As you ascend, the stunning landscapes will unfold before you, characterized by imposing mountains such as Pico das Torres and Pico do Arieiro. Amidst this dramatic scenery, you'll also have the opportunity to spot lesser-known rock formations like the rock of Penha d'Águia and the tip of Ponta de São Lourenço.

Arriving at Pico Ruivo, hikers will be awed by the breathtaking views that surround them - a majestic panorama featuring towering peaks, picturesque villages with their fertile lands, vast sea stretches, and a sky dominated by low-hanging clouds. As you take in this incredible spectacle, you'll feel a profound sense of achievement and wonder at the beauty unfolding around you.
